RANDOM THOUGHTS – KOSTYA AND RETIREMENT

August 28th 2006 02:00
Former 140 pound king, Kostya Tszyu hasn’t fought in nearly 2 years now, though the Russian born fighter has not officially retired. At 36 years of age, the man has provided many thrills in the square ring, but as the old saying goes, time waits for no man.

After the Hatton bout, my immediate thoughts were for Tszyu to rematch Hatton in the States, with an officiator like Jay Nady, who would hinder any form of standing Brazilian Jujitsu. Not to take anything away from Ricky’s achievement, but the fight was an ugly one.

Though now, with Tszyu’s inactivity, and numerous business ventures, would a return to the ring be a successful one. Tszyu has recently stated that he may return if a certain bout interests him, so let us examine some options.

Ricky Hatton is an obvious choice considering he handed Tszyu one of his few defeats. Tszyu may have to climb the weight ladder, as Hatton’ last bout against Luis Collazo was fought at the 147 pound division.

Floyd Mayweather Jr, generally regarded as the pound for pound king, would also be an enticing opponent for Tszyu. He is also campaigning nowadays in the welterweight division, and Tszyus’ defeat of his uncle Roger would only add spice to the mix. It’s Floyd’s speed versus Kostya’s power in this one.

A fight with Jose Luis Castillo would be a war. Castillo, having embarrassingly not made the weight in his proposed third bout with Corrales, plans on moving up to the 140 pound ranks. If Tszyu can still make the weight, this one could easily fit into the fight of the year type mould.

There are many other fights out there that I haven’t mentioned, but whatever option Tszyu takes, it can’t take away from what has been a remarkable career. From Serov to Sydney, Tszyu has come a long way, and is sure to pull no punches in whatever avenues he pursues.
